Charles Whittle writes in to PC Gamer.
Like many a gamer who remembers the glorious fun to be had back in the day of the wondrous
X-COM: UFO Defense and
X-COM: Terror from the Deep, I yearn daily for someone to bring back that experience, enchanced with modern graphics and a more sophisticated interface. Recently, Dan Stapleton made some remarks on
PGGamer.com saying that the lukewarm review of
UFO: Extraterrestrials might not be relevant, given that a new free mod has removed many of hte problems the game had and has fixed many of the "broken" game elements. I would like to see a full review of the modded game to see if it's worth having. Does this modded version of
UFO: Extraterrestrials give the nostalgic
UFO fan the alien-hunting fix that he craves?
PC Gamer responds:
Sorry, Charles -- we don't review mods, just commercially released games. Mods change so fast that by the time we've reviewed one, its gameplay has often changed to the point where the review is no longer useful. However, in this particular case, the modded version of
UFO: ET (using
Bman's Mod) plays closer to X-COM than anything we've seen in a decade -- but we still won't call the graphics "modern."
Major congratulations to Bman for getting his mod published in the premier gaming magazine.
| Downloads for Everyone | Saturday 18 August 2007 - 20:40:55 |
We decided to stop people from having to create user accounts before they could download mods from the scene. I think it will generate more traffic and more downloads and help expand the scene.
| UFO: Scene reaches 200 members. | Thursday 16 August 2007 - 18:50:44 |
At ease recruits.
CAF High Command is pleased to announce that it's recruitment drive has paid rich dividends in recent weeks. There has been a surge in enlistments in the Ilyria area, as well as a steady trickle of enlistments in the outlying areas of Medie, Stratos and Pulsar. This rise in troop numbers is put down to the generous incentives offered by CAF High Command in our last bulletin. It was rumoured that the 200th recruit would receive a Particle Rifle as part of his/her equipment. We are pleased to announce that
theboneyarm is the worthy winner of this award. theboneyarm is to report to the alien base in Seathopia, where his Particle Rifle can be retrieved from the cold dead hands of the Phantoms he will need to slay to claim his prize.
The top brass at CAF Headquarters would like to say that they are enormously satisfied with the recent recruits - more than 100 in less than a month. That's a 100% increase for you Patrians. To entice more people to join the good fight, CAF Headquarters would like to proudly announce that the 300th member of UFO:Scene will get a Particle Rifle delivered to his/her home, as well as an Advanced Mind Shield.
Dismissed.
